Business Challenge
  • The fifth-largest bank card provider in the USA — headquartered in San Francisco with operations centres across multiple US states, the UK, and Argentina — was running its core banking systems on an Informix database backend with Visual Basic frontend. The APS system and several supporting systems (ARP, LAP, DTP, OFR, Refresher) were built on Informix 4GL and ESQL/C. The client needed a full migration to Oracle to improve performance and eliminate dependency on the legacy Informix platform.
Our Solution
  • Migrated the entire application from Informix to Oracle — Informix 4GL procedures converted to Oracle PL/SQL packages using a 4GL conversion tool for partial automated conversion, with manual intervention to achieve 100% migration accuracy
  • Report-generating 4GL scripts converted to Oracle Reports; applications written in ESQL/C and Informix embedded SQL migrated to Pro*C and Oracle SQL using the ESQL/C converter
  • Result was a fully migrated Oracle PL/SQL and Pro*C platform that accurately replicated all original Informix functionality with improved performance
Key Results
  • 100% migration from Informix to Oracle PL/SQL packages and Pro*C achieved
  • Improved application performance delivered across all migrated systems
  • Informix 4GL, ESQL/C, and embedded SQL all successfully converted
  • Report files converted to Oracle Reports preserving all reporting functionality
  • All existing APS, ARP, LAP, DTP, OFR, and Refresher system functionality preserved
The story so far

From legacy Informix to Oracle — 100% migration, improved performance.

A fifth-largest bank card provider in the USA partnered with Kumaran to migrate its entire Informix-based banking platform to Oracle, achieving 100% migration accuracy and delivering the performance improvements the client required. The engagement covered Informix 4GL to Oracle PL/SQL, ESQL/C to Pro*C, and Informix Reports to Oracle Reports — across the full suite of core banking systems serving VISA and MasterCard credit cards, membership services, and high-yield deposit accounts. Kumaran's tool-assisted approach with manual quality assurance ensured every line of Informix logic was accurately replicated in the Oracle environment.

The Background

The bank's core operations had been built on Informix 4GL and ESQL/C, supporting a broad range of lending, deposit, and membership-based products across multiple US states, the UK, and Argentina. As the Informix platform aged and performance became a constraint, the client identified Oracle as the target platform for modernisation. The complexity of the migration — spanning multiple application systems and programming languages including 4GL, ESQL/C, and embedded SQL — required a specialist approach combining automated tooling with manual expertise to ensure complete and accurate conversion.
