DQV
Business Challenge
  • The bank's Retail Wealth Management Technology business wanted to migrate roughly 23 million records across 15 tables from its IBM DB2 database to a new MS SQL Server database on Azure cloud, supporting the Tax Estimator and Business Cash Flow Planning applications. Microsoft's own SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) was evaluated first, but it required special privileges on the MS SQL server plus additional software installation, and it offered no way to compare source and target data once a migration ran. The bank needed both a reliable migration path and an independent way to confirm every record had moved across correctly.
Our Solution
  • Use DQV product to run the migration across DIT, SIT, and PROD environments, then used DQV again post-migration to compare source and target - one tool for both steps, unlike SSMA
  • Compare DB2 and SQL Server database structures directly to quickly flag any structural differences before data even moved
  • Migrate all 15 tables and ~23 million records in 15 minutes, with no special server privileges or extra software installation
  • Run a full, non-sampled 23-million-record comparison across all 15 tables in 10 minutes, confirming every record and every field matched
  • Any differences at the field level, the team could pinpoint discrepancies immediately rather than combing through raw exports
Key Results
  • Data migrated from source to target with zero errors
  • 100% of the 23 million records across all 15 tables confirmed fully matched - 0% mismatch
  • Field-level difference highlighting let the team confirm migration accuracy within minutes, not hours or days
  • Removed dependency on SSMA's privileged server access and extra software installation
  • Combined migration and validation completed in 25 minutes end-to-end (15 min migrate + 10 min compare)
The story so far

From a stalled DB2-to-SQL migration to a fully validated 23M-record cutover in 25 minutes.

Kumaran partnered with the Retail Wealth Management Technology team at one of the top 5 Canadian banks to migrate the Tax Estimator and Business Cash Flow Planning applications from IBM DB2 to MS SQL Server. After SSMA proved impractical - requiring elevated server privileges, extra software, and offering no data comparison - the team used DQV to run the migration itself and then validate it, moving and confirming roughly 23 million records across 15 tables with zero mismatches.

The Background

The bank's Tax Estimator and Business Cash Flow Planning applications ran on an ageing IBM DB2 database that needed to move to MS SQL Server. Microsoft's SQL Server Migration Assistant (SSMA) was the initial option, but it required special privileges on the SQL Server and additional software installation, and it had no built-in way to verify that migrated data actually matched the source. Without an independent comparison step, the team had no fast way to confirm a migration this size - 23 million records across 15 tables - had completed cleanly.
