A major transporter of oil through ships. A major shipping company is one of the parent group’s original operating entities. Its responsibility is to ensure safe cargo transportation to customers across the globe. The client transports 365 million barrels of oil per year, and imports more than 600,000 barrels per day of crude oil into the United States. Headquartered in San Ramon, California, and regional offices in Houston, Texas, London and Singapore.

They also offer a full range of marine services: transportation, commercial arrangements, risk management and technical consulting. The staff includes roughly 1,275 mariners and 225 shore side support staff.

Business Challenge

The shipping company’s Risk Assessment System is used to reduce vessel risk on transportation. Risk evaluation processes have been integrated in to the application, which provides accurate clearance decision with the latest information available in the database.

Risk assessment system is the client’s proprietary software application used to verify safety and quality information, nominated for the parent corporation and its affiliates. The vetting team mainly uses the application for Port and Vessel clearance process.

The client is looking for new technology solution, which is capable of handling the below scenarios.

• Application should have capability to embed with internal systems.
• Application should have the capability of handling web service based data transfer from third party data
  providers.

In future, any new advanced data exchange technology should also be feasible to be integrated and managed.

Kumaran Solution

Kumaran has created the Oracle Migration solution (Oracle 3 to 6) for the client’s Risk Assessment application. Our technical resources continued providing support to the IT team for many years. Technical teams have upgraded the same application from Oracle 9i to 10G as an internal requirement.

Based on the value added solution and support service, the client invited Kumaran to take part in the same application (Risk Assessment) re-engineering project proposal. Kumaran team won the project competing with Tier 1 companies.

Kumaran proposed the cross platform application re-engineering solution using Microsoft .Net technology.

Since most of internal systems are running on Microsoft platform, new application can easily be integrated.

Microsoft.Net provides technologies and tools using which webservices can be created easily and efficiently for internal and third party data transfer.

The existing application functions and features were migrated with negligible deviation. Menu and record navigation has been made simple.
